about

We’re knocking another one off our bucket list! This time we’re bringing you a collab between Jem Stone (one half of Soul of Man and co-founder of legendary Finger Lickin' Records) and Jason Laidback (of label mates Slyde) called Mantra. In this tribal breakbeat roller, crafty crate-digging and sampling meets monster drum production and layers upon layers of funk. A 303 acid synth snakes its way in during the intro as we get a few stabs of the main vocal sample. At the first breakdown, tribal percussive elements begin to build as the 808 bassline begins to pump. The first of the hypnotic chants sweeps in and, through a myriad of reverbs and delays, propels us like a call to prayer into the drop. The bassline returns under the kick and snare along with the tribal percussion elements. Dashes of the vocal sample float in and out as we ride back and forth between segments of arpeggiated and acid synths. Wrapped up in Jem’s specially-created illustration, just one listen and Mantra will have you fully immersed in its breakbeat tribal funk journey.
